Ecliptic Times: Volume V, Issue I

I am going on a trip to my brother's college near LA, and will be back Monday. Until then, you can read my story so far!

In the land of Mitharis there is a tower. No one remembers how or when it got there; as long as the people have been around, so has the tower. The tower is at the very center of the land, and it was rumored that when you stood at the top you could see the entire land of Mitharis and even the lands beyond the Ridge. The odd thing was that, if you were to ask anyone what the tower looked like, or what was inside it, they would look at you oddly, with a puzzled expression, and say, “Well, it’s the tower. Everyone knows what’s inside!”, then change the subject or simply walk away. The tower was there, but the people never really gave it much thought, and the days passed in Mitharis without change.

Occasionally, however, someone would grow very interested in it. Treasure hunters, adventure seekers, or those just looking for a change in the monotony of their lives would begin asking everyone about it, finding out everything they could about the tower. And then, when they either were fed up with questioning or simply impatient, they set off on the journey for the tower. These curious souls were soon forgotten by the townspeople, and they did not return. It was considered a curse to go journeying to the tower, and the saying “Going to the tower” began to be used as another way of saying “death”. Yes, people tended not to dwell on the tower or its seekers, yet in the back of everyone’s mind lay the question of what the tower really was. Indeed, the townsfolk had guesses. But no one knew for sure.

Ecliptic Times Questionnaire One

I don't demand user input all that often, but here, if you read this newspaper and/or the study guides or anything, please answer this question! I really, really want to know what you guys think, because it changes 1/7 of my life around! So please, even if you usually don't comment, make a profile, or sign in as anonymous, or anything to post a comment and tell me what you think. It would mean a lot to me. But I will stop my blabbering now and let you read the actual question itself.

Should Ecliptic Times update every Friday, but with less content, or update every other Friday, with higher quality issues?

Whatever gets the most I will do, as I care about my readers almost as much as I care about my writing. Almost.

Keep in mind I will continue the study guides every Sunday night (or before every test, as was the case yesterday) regardless.

1. Aspects of European expansion in the pre industrial era were: spices, manufactured goods were sought
2. Aspects of imperialism in the period following European industrialization were: converting different people, and competition between different European nations.
3. The shift from preindustrial to industrial imperialism was around the 19^th century
4. The management of colonial enterprises by the Dutch and British EIC’s were haphazard in organization, and contrary to the designs and interests of the enterprises themselves.
5. The 18^th century land empires in Asia were accumulated with divide and conquer tactics.
6. The conquest of Java around the 17-18C.E. were the earliest example of a European empire built as a result of independent initiative of company agnates.
7. The DEI were happy to be vassals of the dominating Mataram, and paid tributes. Gradually, over decades, they concentrated on gaining monopoly control over spices produced on the smaller islands of the Indonesian archipelago. Also, they worked as mercenaries for land.
8. Each time the DEI fought for a prince, the prince had to give the DEI a large amount of land. This resulted, in 1750’s, a dominating dutch control of the entire island.
9. The British EIC employed the same divide and conquer tactic against India
10. Britain employed a more direct approach of conquest than the dutch, with outright fighting occurring. Unlike the dutch, as well, the British bought off the Indians, instead of the reverse for the Dutch.
11. Plassey was a decisive battle in 1757 in which 3000 british troops and Indian soldiers defeated an Indian army of almost 50k strong. This allowed the British to take control of the fertile and populous kingdom of Bengal.

Chapter 23 Study Guide
1.Enlightenment thinkers challenged regimes that did not grant full religious freedom and challenged those that insisted on aristocratic privilege. As an example, Jean-Jaques Rousseau argued for government based on a democracy.
2.Europe’s population after 1730 exploded; for example, French population rose by 50% within half a century, Britain and Prussia rose by 100%.
3.The proletariat was the working class of society, and were growing more restricted, as upper class families attempted to tighten their grips on existing offices. This produced a demand for change.
4.Protoindustrialization was a rapid expansion of domestic manufacturing in western Europe and later, the United States. This new development involved hundreds of thousands of workers who became part time or full time producers of textile and metal products
5.Urbanization resulted in many villagers beginning to change their dress into more urban styles, parental authority declined, and youthful independence became more marked; possible political implications from a new defiance of authority emerged.
6.The American Revolution was the result of a large minority of American colonists who resisted Britain’s attempt to impose new taxes and trade controls on the colonies after 1763. Many colonists also resented restrictions on movement into the frontier areas.

7.The American Constitution was created in 1789.

Factors why the French Revolution came into place were: Ideological insistence on change won increasing attention from mid 18^th C.E. onward, as Enlightenment thinkers urged the need to limit the powers of Catholic church, the Aristocracy, and the Monarchy. Social changes reinforced this challenge. Some middle class, proud of their business or professional success, wanted a greater political role. Peasants, pressed on by population growth, wanted more freedom from their landlord’s demands.

12.Napoleon was defeated by the Russian winter in 1812, and by an alliance system made by Britain who defeated him in 1814 and 1815.

13.The Revolution spread key revolutionary legislation, the idea of equality under the law and the attack on privileged institutions such as aristocracy, church, and craft guilds.

14.The Congress of Vienna involved many territorial arrangements, such as giving Britain several colonial territories, and letting Russia maintain its hold over Poland. As well as this, attempts were made to restore French monarchy, and to link Europe’s major powers in defense of churches and kings.

15.Ideas of liberals included looking for ways to limit state interference in individual life and urged representation of propertied people in government. They touted the importance of constitutional rule and protection for freedoms of religion, press, and assembly.

16.Socialism urged an attack on private property in the name of equality and an end to capitalist exploitation of workers.

17.In 1820, the nationalist Greek Revolution allowed Greece to secede against Ottoman rule; this was a key step to dismantling the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. In 1830, the Belgian Revolution produced a liberal regime and a newly independent nation.

18.The Reform Bill of 1832 was a bill passed by Britain under pressure of popular agitation; it gave the parliamentary vote to most middle class men.

School Life
It always seems I update on RALLY days. Actually, despite my usual caustic remarks, I have to admit this one wasn't really that bad. It was only marginally bad. The sports were stupid, but the dancing was a step above usual. Maybe I just liked the song choices. Or maybe it was because three teachers sat in front of me and SHHed every time I said something while the MCs were talking, thus forcing me to behave myself a bit more and to actually pay attention. Either ways, we will see if we get as lucky with the next rally(s). ((For another view, take a look at Justin's Blog))

HHEEHAHEHEHAHEAHEAHEAHHAEHAEHAEHEAHEAH ITS SO EASY.
It is not easy at all guys. This kind of stuff is crazyimpossible, and instead of going over it Ms. Tseng assigns us evens AND a WS? Now don't get me wrong, Ms. Tseng is awesome. But really? When will we EVER need to know this in the real world? Is some random guy going to come up and say, "Hey buddy, I got this cone in a bowl, see, and I'm looking for someone who can tell me how fast it's filling up when this here radius, see, is 5 cm. Thanks, buddy."?? Actually, that would be pretty hilarious, seeing a cone in a bowl and all that crazyness. Heh heh... I like that guy.

Short Story Contest

Milpitas Arts is having a contest for new writers. Write a short story, less than 2000 words, enter it online, and potentially win 1000$. I plan on writing my story this weekend, but I just thought I'd let the people who read this know about it. This is the real deal here guys. Also, I'll post my story when I finish it. Story Time
Chapter One, part 5
"Jaroa. Jaroa, can you hear me?"
...What?
"Jaroa...wake up! Hurry, Jaroa!"
...Who was calling him?
"Jaroa... it's here! There's no time!"
He opened his eyes. Everything was fuzzy. "D-Danny?"
A quick slap from his sister cleared his vision.
"It's DanielaRGH!"
"Danielargh? What are you talking about, sis? Sis?"
But Daniela was gone. Jaroa took a moment to see what was around him. He was a a corridor made of metal. Behind him it stretched into a fork, and in front... his sister and two others were fighting for their lives. What's going on? he thought. Then, as he watched, head still pounding, a spike impaled one of the humans. "Phyl!" shouted the other, and with blind fury charged the beast. But to no avail. The man was sent reeling backwards with a smack from a silvery, iridescent fist and hit the wall, blood already oozing from his skull.
"Run, Jaroa!" Daniela yelled to him. Jaroa, filled with terror, didn't second guess his sister. But something about the glimpse of the creature had seemed odd. He turned to get a better look... and was shoved roughly by his sister. "Keep going!" she cried. "There's no way we can beat her!"
Her? Jaroa wondered. "Go! And don't look back!"
They ran.

Rants and Raves
This week's rant: Grades by me!
For the first time in my life, I have gotten a B+ in school. Grrrrr, you're probably thinking, I always get B's and stuff. But for me, you have to understand, this came as a shock. I grew accustomed to easy classes, and became sure I could just breeze my way through the course. Reality check much? I probably failed/D'd five tests at the beginning of the year, at least. "No big deal" I thought. I'll bounce back. But guess what? I DIDN'T. The only way I see it, this is totally my fault. BUT...... what I can do is work harder, study more, and read the chapter one more time. I'm not happy with myself for failing, but it just means I have to work harder now. This is also a message for those who may feel the same way I do; put the work in, get good grades, and the one who will feel the best is you.

Chapter One, part 4
It was his best childhood friend, Renault. And was pointing a knife right at Jaroa. "Don't move..." said Renault threateningly, "or I'll run you through here and now. Now here's what we're going to do. You're going to place the blindfold around your eyes. And you're going to move. And you won't peek unless you want to die, got it?" Jaroa gulped.
"Renault..." he started. No response. "Renault... why are you doing this? What's happened to you? Don't you remember who I am? Jaroa! We used to be best friends!" A flicker of doubt passed across Renault's face.
"What am I..." he began. Then the moment passed, and his face once again turned hard. "Put it around your eyes. NOW. And no more talking, or I will kill you, going against her orders."
Her? Jaroa wondered. "But I..."
And then all he knew was pain. He felt the blade burning where it had entered his body, but it also felt as if all his skin was on fire. He tried changing and, with a chill, found he could not. His vision began to fade.
"Next time," said Renault, "follow orders."
And then the world turned black.

This week's rant: The Paper by me!
What. Is. My. Problem?! Why do I ALWAYS end up missing my updates?! Does anyone even read this?! AM I JUST WASTING MY TIME? At least I smile when I Google "Ecliptic Times" and my site is the first to come up. That always makes me feel good. But who in the WORLD is going to ever Google "Ecliptic Times?!" The thing is, guys, that no one besides sophomores at MHS is ever going to read this. It doesn't correspond to their lives. Man, it barely even corresponds to YOUR lives?! What is this point of this newspaper anyway? Why do I even keep it up? Why did I start it in the first place? These are all questions I find myself asking myself frequently. And then I remember... it will be great on my college apps. XD. Dylan out.

Ecliptic Times: Hello Ms. Roth. How are you today?
Ms. Roth: Fine, thank you.
T: Ok, let's start off with some basics. How long have you been teaching?
R: 19 years.
T: What subjects do you teach?
R: I have taught everything from 7th-12th grade English, I have taught history, and I currently am teaching high-school English.
T: What is your favorite book to teach? Why?
R: Hmmm... that's a tough one. Can I name my favorite unit?
T: Go ahead.
R: My favorite unit to teach is the Shakespeare unit, because there is just so much material. Videos, the history of the time, the plays to read... the plays in particular are fun, becuase not only are they great stories, but their themes still resonate with society today. Shakespeare understood people, and people do not change.
T: Do you have any tips for students on how to do well in school?
R: Stay organized, stay organized, stay organized. Keep a daily planner and write everything down in it, and make sure you have a reliable time and place to do your homework that you can always count on for some quiet studying. In addition, get together with friends who are also studying. Work together, and you'll be surprised by how much you start to understand.
T: What are some of the best excuses you've heard from students?
R: Let's see... There was one student who said they couldn't do their homework because they never made it home. Another good one was the student who left his backpack at his grandmother's and her house burned down. I let him off the hook. Finally, there was a girl who said it was impossible to study in her house because her mom had had twins, and she could barely even sleep with all the crying. I understood that one two, knowing all too well how a baby can change around a household.
T: What is your favorite teaching memory?
R: There was once a student who was failing my class. After a while, his grandfather, who was retired, started coming in every day. It was perfectly fine with the school, as the grandfather had gone through all the proper steps. And every day, he just sat in the back of the class listening to me and making sure his grandson stayed on track. At the end of the school year, the student passed with a B. But the best part was that, at the end of the Shakespeare unit, the grandfather came up and spoke with me after class. He said that I had taught the unit so well, and he had been so fascinated, that he was going to go home and learn and read all the Shakespeare that he could. He said it was all thanks to my wonderful teaching. That stands out in my mind as my favorite teaching moment because not only was I able to help the students, but I was able to teach a fully grown man and excite his passion in learning, due to my teaching.
T: Are you excited for break? What are your plans? (Note: I quicly realized the first question was stupid.)
R:[laughs] Who isn't? My plans are to fly down to Hawaii on a private jet flown by my husband, and spend break relaxing in the sun of the islands and in the comfort of our own Hawaiian home, which we own. It's going to be perfect weather for a perfect vacation, too!
T: Is there a question you've always wanted to be asked in an interview?
R: Nope! [Note: This threw me a bit off guard, as I was planning for the last question to be the question she wanted to be asked. But it looks like she beat me this time.]
T: Alright... any last words before I go?
R: I've never even wanted to be interviewed before! This will be the only interview I'm going to have this entire school year.
