Ecliptic Times Holiday Special

Ecliptic Times:
The Life, Times, and Happenings of the Sophomores of MHS (During Winter Break)
Holiday Special
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Happy Holidays to all y'all

Contributors (Awesome People)
Nope!

Paper News. News that you can use.
For all of you who missed the Times two Fridays ago, I sincerely apologize. I fully intended to have a Mega Holiday Issue but, in my stupidity, did not voice my intentions until I realized what I had not put. (Got that?) So anyway, I hope you enjoy this issue. Please enjoy this candy cane as an apology.

Candy Cane

In further news, this is going to be the last issue of the year. Imma make some New Year's Resolutions about my updates, which I think you will be pretty happy about. By which I mean I'll update every day. Thanks for reading!

School Life
We have been having Winter Break, if you haven't noticed, which means there is no school. Hope you enjoyed all your presents!

Bragger's Box
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I could brag about my presents... but that wouldn't be part of the season nor make anyone feel good. If YOU, however, would like to brag about your presents, please let me know and I'll put you up here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Contests
Jusin Vu and Joseph Ou are both tied with one point. Whoever gets today's will WIN!
Also, a bit on how the money will be doled out.
  • With only one person, all money goes to him.
  • With two people, the money is divided evenly without anyone getting more. For exaple, if Jim and Joe both have the same number of points in the 5$ contest, they'd both get 2$ with 1$ left over.
  • With three people, follow the same rules for two people. If Jim, Joe, and Jake all have the same number of points, they'd each get 1$ with 2$ left over.
  • All left over money from a contest goes into the next contest's pool. So if a bunch of people tie, the next contest would be really big!
Anyway, keep those guidelines in mind so your not all "OMG I WON WEARS MY 5$ OMGOMGOMG" or whatever you people do in those situations.

You should be able to find plenty to do today. But if not, please feel free to take a look at the Epic Battle G-docs again. They're really coming along quite nicely, but none are yet completed.

Story Time
Chapter One, part 4
It was his best childhood friend, Renault. And was pointing a knife right at Jaroa. "Don't move..." said Renault threateningly, "or I'll run you through here and now. Now here's what we're going to do. You're going to place the blindfold around your eyes. And you're going to move. And you won't peek unless you want to die, got it?" Jaroa gulped.
"Renault..." he started. No response. "Renault... why are you doing this? What's happened to you? Don't you remember who I am? Jaroa! We used to be best friends!" A flicker of doubt passed across Renault's face.
"What am I..." he began. Then the moment passed, and his face once again turned hard. "Put it around your eyes. NOW. And no more talking, or I will kill you, going against her orders."
Her? Jaroa wondered. "But I..."
And then all he knew was pain. He felt the blade burning where it had entered his body, but it also felt as if all his skin was on fire. He tried changing and, with a chill, found he could not. His vision began to fade.
"Next time," said Renault, "follow orders."
And then the world turned black.

Rants and Raves
This week's rant: The Paper by me!
What. Is. My. Problem?! Why do I ALWAYS end up missing my updates?! Does anyone even read this?! AM I JUST WASTING MY TIME? At least I smile when I Google "Ecliptic Times" and my site is the first to come up. That always makes me feel good. But who in the WORLD is going to ever Google "Ecliptic Times?!" The thing is, guys, that no one besides sophomores at MHS is ever going to read this. It doesn't correspond to their lives. Man, it barely even corresponds to YOUR lives?! What is this point of this newspaper anyway? Why do I even keep it up? Why did I start it in the first place? These are all questions I find myself asking myself frequently. And then I remember... it will be great on my college apps. XD. Dylan out.

Interview
Sharon Roth

Ecliptic Times:
Hello Ms. Roth. How are you today?
Ms. Roth: Fine, thank you.
T: Ok, let's start off with some basics. How long have you been teaching?
R: 19 years.
T: What subjects do you teach?
R: I have taught
everything from 7th-12th grade English, I have taught history, and I currently am teaching high-school English.
T: What is your favorite book to teach? Why?
R: Hmmm... that's a tough one. Can I name my favorite unit?
T: Go ahead.
R: My favorite unit to teach is the Shakespeare
unit, because there is just so much material. Videos, the history of the time, the plays to read... the plays in particular are fun, becuase not only are they great stories, but their themes still resonate with society today. Shakespeare understood people, and people do not change.
T: Do you have any tips for students on how to do well in school?
R:
Stay organized, stay organized, stay organized. Keep a daily planner and write everything down in it, and make sure you have a reliable time and place to do your homework that you can always count on for some quiet studying. In addition, get together with friends who are also studying. Work together, and you'll be surprised by how much you start to understand.
T: What are some of the best excuses you've heard from students?
R:
Let's see... There was one student who said they couldn't do their homework because they never made it home. Another good one was the student who left his backpack at his grandmother's and her house burned down. I let him off the hook. Finally, there was a girl who said it was impossible to study in her house because her mom had had twins, and she could barely even sleep with all the crying. I understood that one two, knowing all too well how a baby can change around a household.

T: What is your favorite teaching memory?
R: There was once a student who was failing my class. After a while, his grandfather, who
was retired, started coming in every day. It was perfectly fine with the school, as the grandfather had gone through all the proper steps. And every day, he just sat in the back of the class listening to me and making sure his grandson stayed on track. At the end of the school year, the student passed with a B. But the best part was that, at the end of the Shakespeare unit, the grandfather came up and spoke with me after class. He said that I had taught the unit so well, and he had been so fascinated, that he was going to go home and learn and read all the Shakespeare that he could. He said it was all thanks to my wonderful teaching. That stands out in my mind as my favorite teaching moment because not only was I able to help the students, but I was able to teach a fully grown man and excite his passion in learning, due to my teaching.
T: Are you excited for break? What are your plans? (Note: I quicly realized the first question was stupid.)
R:
[laughs] Who isn't? My plans are to fly down to Hawaii on a private jet flown by my husband, and spend break relaxing in the sun of the islands and in the comfort of our own Hawaiian home, which we own. It's going to be perfect weather for a perfect vacation, too!
T: Is there a question you've always wanted to be asked in an interview?
R: Nope!
[Note: This threw me a bit off guard, as I was planning for the last question to be the question she wanted to be asked. But it looks like she beat me this time.]
T: Alright... any last words before I go?
R: I've never even wanted to be interviewed before! This will be the only interview I'm going to have this entire school year.

T: Thank you for your time. Goodbye!

New issue coming soon!

It'll be the Mega Holiday Blowout Issue, taking the place of two!

Edit 1: I suppose none of you expected to read it today anyway, and are all busy spending time with family, much as I should be doing right now. Thus, I will update first thing tomorrow morning. Enjoy all your Christmas loots! And Merry Christmas, guys. Thanks all of you who have stuck with my terrible update schedule and still read the new issues. Thanks.

I messed up, guys. I sincerely admit that I did, and it was entirely my fault.
Now that that's out of the way, I think this issue will be pretty cool. Chapter One, part 4
Suddenly, a shadow leaped out at him! It hit him in the head, then whirled around and struck his back. He turned to face it, and saw... Nothing. Wait... what was that? Jaroa stared. What had seemed like nothing was really something big. Something black. Something deadly. A giant spider was looming over him. But that was impossible. He was certain there were no spiders that big. It was then he remembered he was an ant. He started to turn back into a human, but the spider was lunging, hungry for its next meal! It was coming right at him; he couldn't change in time. All seemed lost... when a foot came from the sky and crushed the spider. His transformation now complete, he looked up to see who had saved him. And gasped.

Rants and Raves
First new feature! This week's rant: Soccer
Sometimes, I really hate the JV team. I go through all this effort, spend crazy amounts of time at practice, then sit on the bench for the WHOLE GAME?! I did not waste this time to become a bench warmer, I can tell you that. I talked to coach about it, and he said I needed more speed and wasn't really "the right match for the game." I can understand that, but what's the point of taking me if I'm just going to be useless. While I'm on soccer, I might as well bring up Thursday's game. I got a whole 10 minutes of playing time, even though I was marking my mand and getting open and stuff. The goalie even accidentally PASSED ME THE BALL and there was a wide open net in front of me. I kicked it over. Actually, I'm beginning to see why I don't play. But I won't quit... I'll stay with it, through thick and thin, and hopefully do at least ONE GOOD PLAY. Geez.

In the letter, Daniela had described the changes coming over Brookshine. It had started as just a small shop in the center of town. But in mere weeks it had spread to a great factory, belching out steam and smoke. And slowly, ever so slowly, residents of the town began to disapear. At the time the letter was written, there was only Daniela and six other citizens out of a town of 50. So now Jaroa was rushing to save whatever was left of Brookshine. Assuming, of course, that there was anything left to save!

Story Time
Chapter One, part 1
It was a dark and stormy night as Jaroa, the changeling, stepped into the streets of Brookshine. It was different from when he had last seen it. It seemed darker, colder, and it felt like all life had been drained from it. The only building with any obvious activity was the factory in the center of the town. It was oozing black smoke, and looked cruel and unusual amongst the cottages dotting the main road. Remembering why he was here, Jaroa started running down the road. But his body started to undergo a remarkable transformation. "Not now!" yelled Jaroa, but he could do nothing to stop it. He teeth became fangs, his legs shortened, his body stretch, and he grew iridescent fur. For Jaroa, being a changeling, could change into any form he desired. But he was young, and in training, and could not properly control his transformation. So when he thought "speed", his body transformed into a cheetah, the animal he considered the fastest on Earth. As he sped towards town, he remembered the letter he had received calling him to Brookshine. It was from Daniela. It was from another changeling. It was from his sister.

My mom called the school and asked if there had been any reported cases of swine flu, and they said no. She works in the city though, and was later talking to one of her friends about swine flu, and he said schools are not allowed, by Carl Black, the superintendent, to disclose any information about swine flu, and to tell people who ask there have been no cases. How's that for something to think about? Looks like I'm not the only thing that's sick here.

But it is not you at the point of awesomeness... for that, I will need some kind of advertisement. Word-of-mouth is good and all, but I'm only on 44 people's Buddy Lists! The three of us are looking for one more player to round it out and maybe have some tournaments. Not really sure what it's actually like? All existing characters are being compiled and will soon be in a Google doc, which I will link to next Issue. I am sure as soon as you see it, you will realize how awesome it is!

Joseph Ou: In line to win five dollars from the "Find Mistakes" contest. He hasn't even found any mistakes, guys! But he's the only one who has at least told me he tried to find mistakes. If you do at least that, you will be tied. The five dollars will be split if there is a tie.

Ecliptic Times: Vol I, Issue II

Ecliptic Times:
The Life, Times, and Happenings of the Sophomores of MHS
Vol I, Issue II
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's finally here!
Yup. The first real issue of Ecliptic Times is up!I know you can't wait to get to all the awesomeness that's sure to follow this intro paragraph, but... well... get right to it! I'm not stopping you! Most issues will follow this basic format, just so you know.

Contributors (Awesome People)
There are no other contributors besides me in this issue! As always, anything you want to say, let me know!

Paper News. News that you can use.
Sorry for getting out this issue so late, (especially since it's first one!) but things have been crazy for the editor staff today! I am thinking to start updating on Fridays instead, while all the fresh school gossip is in my head and I'm not completely exhausted from the weekend! But this paper is still in early stages; it's alright to have problems like that! So for all of you loyal followers, look for Issue III out on Friday!

School Life
As far as I can see or remember, nothing really awesome happened at school last week! Some minor things:
Epic Battle: The Fight for Supremacy is the new awesome turn-based battle game that has already started sweeping the school! For more information, or to join this awesome game, speak to me, Justin Vu, or Jeremy Westover.
Soccer Conditioning: For all of you guys that love soccer out there, conditioning for the JV team has started! While I am probably the only one who really cares about that, just thought I'd let you all know!

Bragger's Box
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The box is for all of you braggers out there? Think you got one of the highest scores on the AP test? Think you just did more awesome than some other guy and wanna let the whole world know? Drop me a line, and I'll put it up here. So everyone can hate you.

Contests
So far, Joseph Ou is winning the contest, as he is the only one who has even tried to find a mistake, or at least the only one who has told me anything. Gratz, Joseph. You are going to win FIVE DOLLARS.

Story Time
Stories are for kids, silly guy! Not anymore, I say. I plan to craft an epic story, but will not be able to do it without your help! I have the basic plan, but I need a name. Give me a name for the main character, and it will be featured in the story! I know how totally awesome that is. Story starts next week!

Polls
Here is your daily poll question.
Who is the most awesome teacher at MHS?
It is free answer style, but I will only show the highest three results!

Closing Thoughts
What a lame issue, you must be thinking. Well, if you are thinking that, then it is your fault! Remember, I take contributions, I take comments, I take most anything you can think of! So send it to me and get it put in here for the whole world to see!

Ecliptic Times: Vol I, Issue I

Ecliptic Times:
The Life, Times, and Happenings of the Sophomores of MHS
Vol I, Issue I
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is this?
This, my friend, is a blog. You've probably already figured that out by now. But this is not a blog of my life, not a blog of me whining and wishing I had more friends, and letting out all my personal feelings, or whatever most people do on a blog. This is a blog of the students, for the students, by, well... mostly by me, but there will be many contributions from you.

What will an issue be like?
The issues, which will for the most part come out weekly on Saturdays, will have everything: polls, websites, contests (where, yes, there will be prizes), important dates, test help, stories about student life... you get the picture. The best parts will be that which you contribute. See something here you don't like? See something you would like here? See a poll? Let me know! Also, for all of those who may want to, I accept contributors: write an article, submit it, and get it published here!

Why are you doing this? Also, who are you?
I'll answer the second question first. I am Ecliptic Hero, a sophomore at MHS. If you've gotten here, you probably already know who I am, but if you don't, find out! It shouldn't be that hard. As to the first question? I hope to be a writer when I grow up (crazy, I know), and this will be a good first step. In addition, I hope to be in journalism next year, and this will be a great way to practice.

How do I contact you?
There are a few ways to do this. One, leave a comment right here on the blog. If you don't want to do that, you could always send an email to me at dlibrande@gmail.com . This would be recommended for all of the longer things you might want to say. Finally, if you just want to say "hey I read that thing you put up lol" contact me on AIM: sn= Ecliptichero . For all of those wondering just exactly "Ecliptic" means, is is like "of an eclipse"! And no, it is not a real word.

Got any other questions? Got any comments? Just want to hate on me and this edition? Let me know! Any and all feedback is welcomed and encouraged!

Finally, I am hereby announcing the first contest! I am pretty sure about my writing abilities. Not to be conceited or anything, but I feel I write fairly well. So here's the deal: if you find a major mistake, and I mean like really important (not that I forgot to capitalize an I or something), be the first one to tell me. At the end of Vol I, which will be sometime around Christmas, the person who has caught the most errors will win 5$!!!! I am not even joking here. I am 100% serious. But remember, my closing comment is also off limits.

Well, that's it for the first issue. Regular updates start Sunday!
